The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a continuous footpath which passes through 14 states, 8 national forests, 6 national parks, and 7 state parks. The southern terminus of the trail is on the summit of Springer Mountain, Georgia and the northern terminus ends on the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine.
About 3,000 individuals attempt to backpack the entire AT in one continuous journey each year (less than 10% actually finish). The average time to complete a thru-hike is 6 months.
Over 1/2 of the thru-hikers that start in Georgia quit in the first 400 miles, which is only 1/5 of the entire trail.
