everest base camp journal: kala pattar

It's all downhill from here, for us anyway

From Kala Pattar you can see both across to the summit of Everest and down to Base Camp. It's a pretty amazing view.  On summit day, you can actually sit at the top of Kala Pattar and watch people go up the Hillary Step. We arrived a few weeks too early to see any climbers that high. Porters were just carrying in the ladders to set up the Ice Fall when we were there.

On the summit of Kala Pattar, at 18,208 feet, our highest elevation on the trek

Heading across the Khumbu Glacier to Base Camp, we passed porters carrying the ladders for the Khumbu Ice Fall.
