Frog Flats Campsite. 20km today, not bad for my second day in Tassie. We had a COLD night at the ol’ Waterfall Valley Hut last night – this morning it was a mere –1C! I was cold off and on all through the night but it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought it would be. I got up early (6:30am) to see ice and frost everywhere in the valley, including on the tops of everyone’s tents! It was certainly chilly.
I was packed up and ready to go by 8am so said ‘G’day’ to Lindsey and Kate and was off. It was great to be on the trail so early on such a clear day. And nice to leave the 40-odd or so people back at the hut behind! The views and scenery on the trail were amazing today. Very spectacular countryside. It was 3 hours to Windemere Hut, and I took a lunch break there and continued on. There were so many beautiful trees and plants and interesting birds all day today.
I got to Frog Flats at 4pm and decided to stay and camp here – one, because it’s a great spot with excellent views, two, because no one is around and I’ve got the woods all to myself, and three, because I really didn’t feel like doing another 2 hours to Pelion Hut. I have to keep reminding myself that I’m not hiking the AT and I am allowed to actually stop early and enjoy myself and not feel guilty!
So I layed in the sun for almost an hour before I started to set up my tent and get organized. I’ve just finished my yummy dinner of brown rice and broccoli in a tortilla and am now about to sip on some Miso soup. I’m just hoping that it’s not as cold as it was last night, but I’m as ready as I’ll ever be with all my clothes on – 6 layers on top and 3 on bottom and 2 pairs of socks. I wish I had brought my winter sleeping bag but those are the breaks. I am just so happy about the fine hiking weather that I can’t exactly complain too much over cold nights. 30km of the 80km Overland Track done so far!
